Amazing Grace from the Sponsors for the 2020 Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational

Jerry Neil Paul
Thank You!

Jerry Neil Paul
Foundation's Executive Director, Elizabeth Ann Paul with Hamilton Event Volunteers. THANK YOU to each and every one of the volunteers for giving their time and helping to make the event fun but also an enormous success!

Jerry Neil Paul
Insulators International Vice President, Doug Gamble and Heat and Frost Insulators Local 16 Business Manager, Mel Breshears are the Event's Hosts and MCs. Doug and Mel have gone above and beyond in their leadership and we cannot thank them enough!

Jerry Neil Paul
Local 16 Business Manager Mel Brashears and International Vice President Doug Gamble, we thank you both, so much, and your team at Local 16 for supporting this great cause.

This year has been a rollercoaster of shut downs and economic uncertainty and the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America has not been untouched. Many of our fundraising efforts had been placed on hold or cancelled but our fortunes turned.

Our first event, the Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational, was planned for June 30th, 2020. With the help of International Heat & Frost Insulators General Secretary-Treasurer, Doug Gamble and Western States Conference International Vice President, Mel Breshears and their team at the Heat & Frost Insulators Local 16, we began planning the event and collecting sponsorships shortly before the shutdowns and closures swept across California. After much deliberation and heartache, the Committee decided to cancel the event and let the sponsors decide what to do with their donations, giving them the option. ALL of the amazing supporters decided to allow the Foundation to keep the sponsorship checks we had collected so they could be donated to research! A total of approximately $90,000 was gifted to the Foundation, 100% of which will go toward supporting Dr. Parkash Gill's research and clinical trials within the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center with collaboration, Per Dr. Gill, with UC Davis, for new and viable treatment options for mesothelioma patients.

This amazing graciousness and turn of fortunes would not have been possible without the leadership of, Doug Gamble and Mel Breshears and all of the people working behind the scenes at Heat & Frost Insulators Local 16. For their dedication and friendship, we owe our greatest gratitude to the Western States Conference Heat and Frost Insulators, the Local 16 Heat and Frost Insulators, as well as all of the building trades who participate year after year.

It is due to this dedication that Dr. Parkash Gill is able to state, "The FDA has approved EphB4 to be used in combination with Merck's PD-1 Immunotherapy drug in new FDA approved clinical trials". The combination, developed at Dr. Gill's lab at USC Norris Comprehensive Medical Center, attack the Mesothelioma solid tumor, plus cut off the blood vessels that feed the tumor and is seen as an amazing breakthrough in mesothelioma treatment.

We cannot be more proud of the results we are seeing in the lab and the continued success of the Hamilton event. Committee Chairman Doug Gamble and Co-Chair Mel Breshears, thanked Committee Members Stan Danielson, Bill Hodges, Mark Plubell, Ben Espinoza, Chris Greaney, Fortino Curiel, Geoff Millar, Jerry and Elizabeth Paul, Shane Rucker and their volunteers and sponsors for all their support this year. THANK YOU ALL for making this possible.

Once again, the event was held at the Moore N Moore Sporting Clay facility in San Fernando, CA and netted approximately $70,000 for mesothelioma research! We saw the largest turnout on record for this event with more than 140 supporters coming out to make a difference, including UA International Pipe Trades Representative, Derrick Kualapai. Jerry Neil Paul
Dr. Parkash Gill, the Foundation's Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, tells supporters the amazing news of the FDA approving the treatment he has been working tirelessly on. He noted the amazing promise the drug has shown in clinical research and that the combination of EphB4 and PD-1 immunotherapy drugs are being used together in approved FDA clinical trials!

You may recall that the FDA had previously approved Dr. Gill's mesothelioma treatment, EPh B-4, for clinical trials after development at his lab at USC/Norris. However, the FDA has now approved EPh B-4 to be used in combination with Mercks PD-1 Immunotherapy drug in a new FDA approved Phase I clinical trial. The two successful, non-chemo drugs, that together attacks both the Mesothelioma solid tumor and at the same time cuts off the vessels that feed the tumor. Dr. Gill has plans to expand clinical trials beyond USC Norris, with plans to talk with UC Davis and expand from there nationally.

With the Foundation's administrative costs underwritten by The Paul Law Firm, 100% of the event's net proceeds will go towards mesothelioma cancer research. With these sizable donations we can be assured that Dr. Gill's clinical trials at USC/ Norris Comprehensive Medical Center will be moving in the right direction. Thank you to all who participated and made the events a success!

Insulators International Vice President, Doug Gamble, tees off on the first hole of the Hamilton Event. Everyone at the Foundation would like to thank Doug for his support, guidance and effort in bringing back the Roger Hamilton Golf Event.

This event would not have been possible without our generous hosts, Doug Gamble and Mel Breshears of the Heat and Frost Insulators. For the second time in a row Gamble, the International Vice President, and Breshears, the Business Manager of Local 16, were gracious enough to host the event for our community. The success of the event rode upon the shoulders of their teams as they both planned and implemented the day's proceedings. Just two years ago, the Insulators took it upon themselves to ensure not only the continuation of the event, but the honoring of Roger Hamilton's memory through fund raising and awareness efforts. Since its inception, the Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational has raised approximately 1.6 million dollars for mesothelioma research in order to try and find a cure to end this malicious disease. For this continued great success, we owe our gratitude to the Western States Conference Heat and Frost Insulators, the Local 16 Heat and Frost Insulators, as well as all of the building trades groups and vendors who participated.

International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators
The Foundation's Executive Director, Elizabeth Paul, was one of the many volunteers who came out to help make the event run smoothly and provide a great environment for the golfers and supporters.

After a great round of golf, the supporters reconvened in the clubhouse for drinks, dinner, and speeches. Doug Gamble and Mel Breshears were the first to speak, thanking both the sponsors for their continued support and the volunteers for their role in planning the event. Next to speak were Elizabeth Paul, Executive Director, and Parkash Gill, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, two of the four representatives from the Foundation at the event. The pair informed the sponsors about the history of the Foundation, pointing out its critical help in the development of better treatment options for mesothelioma. To close their speeches, the two acknowledged the continual support from the staff and family of the Local 16 Heat and Frost Insulators, and for their role in assuming the direction of the event.

An event of this magnitude takes too many people to thank, but certain individuals played a pivotal role in ensuring its success. To Committee Chairman Doug Gamble, Co-Chair Mel Breshears, Stan Danielson, Bill Hodges, Mark Plubell, Ben Espinoza, Chris Greaney, Fortino Curiel, Geoff Millar, Jerry and Elizabeth Paul, and Shane Rucker: we wish to express our greatest appreciation. Doug and Mel did an amazing job in planning such a successful event, and we thank you!

You may recall that the event was established in 2002 by U.A. International Representative of the Pipetrades Jim Kellogg, California Building Trades President Bob Balgenorth, and then California Building Trades Vice President Roger Hamilton, who was also a past Business Manager of the Heat & Frost Insulators. It was Roger’s idea to support research into a cure for mesothelioma. Although, Roger had been diagnosed with cancer several months before the first tournament, Roger was determined to make the first event a success while having a great time out on the course. After Rogers passing, Cindy Hamilton had taken over as chairwoman and together with the California State Building Trades Council, grew the event into what it is today. She has done a magnificent job, dedicating many hours of hard work to bring friends and supporters together, and will continue to be an integral part of the event.

DISTRICT COUNCIL 16 GIVES $200,000
FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Money Goes to Effective, Ongoing Research and Treatment

By Robert Buscemi

The United Association Southern California Pipe Trades Council 16 presented the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America with a check for $200,000 at the Council's annual holiday lunch.

MesoRFA and District Council 16
DC 16 gives a landmark amount to a worthy cause: (l-r) Shane Rucker, Dr. Parkash Gill, Elizabeth Paul, Jerry Neil Paul and John Ferruccio.

The money, all raised in 2014, will go toward a cure for mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. District Council 16 Director of Organizing John Ferruccio emceed the event December 12 at the Dodger Stadium Club. He held off announcing the impressive dollar figure until after the speeches, when a drum roll from the house band built the excitement.

'Every year, as you know, one of our main fundraisers is to find a cure for this unfortunate disease,' Ferruccio told more than 150 attendees. 'Mostly, mesothelioma is affecting our grandfathers, fathers and fathers-in-law. It's gotten a lot better over the years.'

Ferruccio said the Council hosts an annual golf tournament and skeet-shooting events. In addition, the State Building and Construction Trade Council of California raises money through the annual Roger Hamilton golf invitational.

The foundation, known as MESORFA, was founded in 2001 by attorney Jerry Neil Paul, his wife Elizabeth Ann Paul and retired California Pipe Trades Representative and past Vice President of the State Building and Construction Trade Council, Jim Kellogg.

MesoRFA and Elizabeth Paul
"To bring a treatment to the public costs tens of millions of dollars," Elizabeth Paul tells the crowd.

In thanking District Council 16, MESORFA Executive Director Elizabeth Paul explained that all funding goes toward research rather than administration. 'All of this money goes directly to fund a lab at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center here in Los Angeles . We use 100 percent of every dollar donated toward research, for clinical trials and to fund the lab. Nothing goes for the foundation, those costs are privately underwritten.'

Research Costs Millions

Paul said such research is never cheap, and other cancers get more attention and funding than mesothelioma, especially in a tight economy. Indeed, she said, MESORFA operates on a shoestring budget. 'I know people don't understand that, but to bring a treatment to the public costs tens of millions of dollars.'

As such, Paul said District Council 16's annual contribution is crucial. 'Everybody was extremely generous. Families took care of families. My husband Jerry and I are big on family. Your leaders at District Council 16 view your members as family. Because they have gone out of their way to make sure that there are treatments and cures for this horrible disease.'

The disease hits especially hard at workers who have been exposed to asbestos, as many Pipe Trades and other Building Trades were before protections were put in place against the toxic substance. Even now, workers confront the hazard at some job sites.

Paul then introduced Dr. Parkash Gill, who reported that he has made huge strides at his lab through the development of Veglin, a drug that treats the disease. 'I'm honored to be part of it,' Gill said. 'It's a worthy cause. I'm a cancer doctor, so finding a treatment for patients really is a rewarding experience. When somebody is ill and they get better and they go home and never see you again, it's wonderful.'

Gill said that patients are already seeing positive results at treatment advances. He said certain efforts have been completely successful. 'This medicine, we have given to a 78-year-old patient. Two or three years out now, there's no cancer left and no side effects.'

MesoRFA and The Northern California Insulators & Allied Workers Local 16

MesoRFA and Jerry Neil Paul
"To bring a treatment to the public costs millions of dollars," Jerry Neil Paul tells the Local 16 retirees.

The Northern California Insulators & Allied Workers Local 16 Energy Conservation Specialists welcomed Jerry Neil Paul to their annual retirees meeting. Mr. Paul is a founding member of the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America and on the MesoRFA Board of Directors. As the Local 16 has continued to show its support for the on-going mesothelioma cancer cure reseach at the foundation, Jerry Paul shared and explained some of the accomplishments and success stories about patients receiving treatment because of the Local's donations.

Since its opening and after several million dollars in donation funding, the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America is extremely pleased by the results achieved and very excited about the possibilities of a more effective treatment over what presently is available for mesothelioma cancer victims.

MesoRFA and Jerry Neil Paul
Northern California Insulators & Allied Workers Local 16 Energy Conservation Specialists

One of the successful treatments developed by the foundation is Veglin, an anti-angiogenesis non-chemotherapy drug. Veglin has the unique ability to lower the levels of proteins required for mesothelioma cancer tumor growth.

Angiogenesis is a natural process of cellular growth and development; however, it also fuels tumor metastasis (spread and growth of cancer). Tumors have a limited capacity to grow unaided. In order to continue to grow and metastasize, tumors require a continuous flow of oxygen and essential nutrients. In order for tumors to get a continuous flow, they require blood vessel growth into the cancerous mass. Tumors induce the required blood vessel growth by secreting a variety of growth factors (VEGF). It is believed (and proven effective in certain trials) that preventing the formation of new blood vessels can prevent the growth and spread of tumors.

As an   anti-angiogenesis drug , the purpose of Veglin is straightforward; it inhibits the process of angiogenesis (cancer cell growth) from occurring, and with it, the spread of mesothelioma cancer.

MesoRFA and Jerry Neil Paul
L-R: Spider Cantley, Jerry Neil Paul, and President Howard

In thanking the retirees of the Northern California Insulators & Allied Workers Local 16 , Mr. Paul explained that all donations go toward funding research rather than administration. 'All of the money goes directly to fund the research lab at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles . The foundation uses 100 percent of every dollar donated toward research, for clinical trials and to fund the lab. Nothing goes for operating the foundation, those costs are privately underwritten.'

Once again the “Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational” was a monumental success, generating approximately $95,000 for mesothelioma research! This year marks the 13th year of the annual event and was held on June 30, 2014 at the pristine Napa Valley Country Club. Representing the Foundation at the event were Board Member, Jerry Neil Paul, Medical Director Dr. Parkash Gill and Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker.

As many of you know the event was established through the brainstorming of California Building Trades Vice President and International Representative of the Insulators Roger Hamilton, U.A. International Representative of the Pipetrades in California and Hawaii Jim Kellogg and the California Building Trades President Bob Balgenorth. After being diagnosed with cancer Roger felt the need to support research into a cure for mesothelioma while promoting less tobacco use in the building trades. Since Roger's untimely passing his wife, Cindy Hamilton, has taken over as Chair of the Committee and has done a magnificent job in consistently promoting and managing the event every year. She has dedicated many hours of hard work to the event, which has brought friends and supporters together in memoriam of Roger and helped lead the charge for a cure. To date the event has generated approximately $1.2 million for mesothelioma research.

THANK YOU ROGER AND CINDY HAMILTON!

Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational - 2013 12th Annual

The 12th Annual “Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational” was held on July 22nd, 2013 at the pristine Napa Valley Country Club in Napa Valley, CA and once again saw an amazing turnout, generating over $80,000 for mesothelioma research! As always, 100% of the event’s proceeds will go to mesothelioma research. Everyone at the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of American would like to say THANK YOU to all of our supporters, sponsors and committee members who made this event possible.

Special and Successful.

You may recall that the event was established through the dedication of California Building Trades Vice President Roger Hamilton, California Building Trades President Bob Balgenorth and U.A. International Representative of the Pipetrades in California and Hawaii Jim Kellogg, who came together in 2001 to brainstorm ideas for a fundraiser. It was Roger’s idea to support research into a cure for Mesothelioma while promoting less tobacco use in the building trades. Although, Roger had been diagnosed with cancer several months before the first tournament, Roger was determined to make the first event in 2002 a success while having a great time out on the course. Cindy Hamilton has since been Chair of the Committee for the annual event and has done a magnificent job, dedicating many hours of hard work to bring friends and supporters together to lead the charge for a cancer cure.

2013 Richard Hamilton Memorial Golfers: Jerry Neil Paul, Dick Johnson, and Shane Rucker.

After a great round of golf, supporters gathered in the clubhouse for dinner and to learn how their participation in the event is helping to develop new treatment options for mesothelioma. Newly elected President of the California State Buildings Trades, Robbie Hunter and event Chairwoman, Cindy Hamilton, thanked everyone in attendance and spoke of the great turnout, year after year, for this noble cause. Together they introduced the Foundation’s Executive Director, Elizabeth Paul, Assistant Executive Director, Shane Rucker and Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board, Dr. Parkash Gill.

Shane began by thanking everyone who has a hand in making the event a success year after year. Without the dedication of people such as Cindy Hamilton, Bob Balgenorth, Robbie Hunter, Jim Kellogg, Steve Steele and Debra Chaplan we assuredly would not be where we are today in the development of new treatment options. Elizabeth then spoke of Dr. Gill’s exciting news of submitting EPH-B4 to the Food & Drug Administration for Phase I Clinical Trials and its approval for use in human trials at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. We are all very excited by this news and share in Dr. Gill’s exuberance of this new development. Dr. Gill then gave details of how EPH-B4 works efficiently at attacking the cancerous cells while leaving the healthy cells alone, resulting in very few side effects. Then he relayed the story of a 76 year old patient with mesothelioma, who came to him with very little hope and as a last effort to save her life. Since beginning the treatment her mesothelioma has disappeared and she is now living in remission, which has been confirmed through regular CT Scans and PET scans. We are all ecstatic by this news, which was met with thunderous applause from the event’s participants and organizers!

We would again like to thank everyone who participated and had a hand in making this year’s event a great success. We would like to extend a special thank you to Cindy Hamilton, Robbie Hunter, Bob Balgenorth, Jim Kellogg, Steve Steele, Debra Chaplan, Paul Doolittle, Mitch Johnson, Russ O’Brien, Lynn Schorno, Arlene Holm and many others for their tireless efforts in making this event a huge success every year. Your support ensures research into mesothelioma will continue and a cure will be found!

Jim Kellogg kicked off the festivities by thanking everyone in attendance and spoke about the importance of staying involved to continue raising awareness of mesothelioma research. Jim then passed the mic to the Foundations Assistant Executive Director, Shane Rucker, who talked briefly about the advances being made and our hopes for the future. Under the leadership of Dr. Parkash Gill at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer center, new cancer fighting drugs have become available and providing hope. Dr. Gill, with the help of the National Cancer Institute, has submitted the new non-chemotherapy drug, EphB-4, to the FDA and has gotten approval to begin Phase I Clinical Trials. Dr. Gill is also hopeful that UC Davis will participate in the clinical trials for EphB4 alongside USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. With the support of participants in events such as "Aim to Cure" advances in mesothelioma treatment options will be a reality.

As always, 100% of the money raised during the "Aim to Cure" events will go towards mesothelioma cancer research. With these sizable donations we can all be assured that Dr. Gill's research at USC/ Norris Comprehensive Medical Center will move in the right direction.

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED AND JIM KELLOGG FOR PUTTING TOGETHER A FANTASTIC EVENT!

The shooters and supporters of the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America converged on the Birdslanding Hunting Preserve and Sporting Clay facility near Concord, California to raise awareness and donations for mesothelioma cancer research. Representing the Foundation were Board Members Jim Kellogg and Jerry Neil Paul and Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker.

After the event Jim Kellogg thanked everyone who attended and spoke about the importance of staying involved to continue raising awareness of mesothelioma research. Shane Rucker also spoke on behalf of the Foundation and talked about the advances being made and our hopes for the future. Under the leadership of Dr. Parkash Gill at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer center new cancer fighting drugs will soon be available. Dr. Gill, with the help of the National Cancer Institute, hopes to have the new drug B-4 submitted to the FDA for Phase I clinical trials by January of 2012. With the support of participants in events such as “Aim to Cure” advances in mesothelioma treatment options will be a reality.

As always, 100% of the money raised during the “Aim to Cure” events will go to mesothelioma cancer research. With these sizable donations we can be assured that Dr. Gill’s mesothelioma cancer research at USC/ Norris Comprehensive Medical Center will be moving in the right direction. Thank you to all who participated and Jim Kellogg for a fantastic event!

From left to right: U.A. Local 342 Pension Trustee / Asbestos Liaison, Mr. Vern Gosney, MesoRFA Assistant Executive Director, Mr. Shane Rucker, and U.A. Local 342 Business Manager, Mr. Jay Williams.

During his visit, Shane Rucker, highlighted the importance of private donations and the upcoming fundraisers in 2011 to ensure Veglin makes it into Phase III of the FDA approval process. With the current economic situation and the decrease in the number of personal donations the upcoming events are crucial. Shane also spoke about the progress being made in developing new treatment options for mesothelioma and how Veglin is proving to be effective in prolonging a patient's life after being diagnosed with this terrible disease.

We would like to personally thank Vern Gosney, the Retirees, Business Manager Jay Williams and the Local 342 Officers for the opportunity to talk to the very people the Foundation may be called upon to help. It was an honor to meet and have lunch with all of you.

District Council 16 Cure Meso Clayshoot

Posted: October 11, 2010

Everyone at the Mesothelioma Research Foundation would like to congratulate and thank those at the Southern California Pipetrades District Council 16 for organizing another successful event to help find a cure for mesothelioma. This year's Cure Meso Clayshoot was held at the Moore N Moore Sporting Clays facility in San Fernando Valley, CA and was a huge success generating approximately $30,000 for mesothelioma research. Representing the Foundation were Founding Board Member Jerry Neil Paul, Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board Dr. Parkash Gill and Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker who had a great time at the event. As always, 100% of the money generated at the event will go directly to mesothelioma research to help find a cure for this terrible disease.

After a nice day in the California sun and enjoying the picturesque canyons of the Angeles National Forest the shooters gathered for a delicious lunch and to learn a little bit of where their generous donations were going. Speaking on behalf of D.C. 16 was Business Manager Sid Stolper who thanked everyone who came out to support the event and those who volunteer their time at MESORFA including Dr. Parkash Gill, Jerry N. Paul Elizabeth A. Paul and Shane Rucker. Speaking on behalf of the Foundation was Jerry N. Paul who also thanked everyone in attendance and those who had a hand in making the event such a success. He then introduced Dr. Parkash Gill who was there to spread the good news coming from the laboratory at USC Norris Cancer Center. Veglin is set to be introduced into Phase III FDA clinical trials and the second drug, Eph-B4, is scheduled to be in human trials beginning in February 2011. This is fantastic news and highlights the importance of donations and fundraising events in getting cancer fighting drugs into treatments centers around the world.

The Foundation would like to personally thank all of those who organized and supported this year's events. Without the support and organizing skills of people such as DC 16 Business Manager Sid Stolper, DC 16 Assistant Business Manager Mike Layton, DC 16 Director of Organizing John Ferruccio and International Pipetrades Representative Jim Kellogg these types of events would not be possible.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND DEDICATION!!!

Representing the Foundation was Board Member and Paul & Hanley Partner, Jerry Neil Paul, Board Member and International Pipetrades Representative, Jim Kellogg, Medical Director, Dr. Parkash Gill and Assistant Executive Director, Shane Rucker. After a great day of golf Dr. Gill emphasized the necessity of fundraisers in getting drugs through the FDA approval process and in the development of new cancer fighting drugs. With Veglin's introduction to Phase III FDA clinical trials in January of 2011 we will need all of the support we can get. With the support of District Council 16 and its members we can beat this cancer.

The Foundation would like to personally thank all of those who organized and supported this year's event. Without the support and organizing skills of people such as Jim Kellogg, Sid Stolper, Mike Layton and John Ferruccio, and Committee members Jerry and Elizabeth Paul, Jack Ferrara and David Harper, this event and great turnout would not have been possible. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR DEDICATION!!!

2010 Annual Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational

A Mesothelioma Cancer-Cure Fund Raising Event

Posted: Jun 21, 2010

The 9th Annual “Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational” was held on June 21st , 2010 at the Napa Valley Country Club in Napa Valley , CA and once again saw an amazing turnout, generating over $80,000 for mesothelioma cancer research! As always, 100% of the event's proceeds will go to cancer research. Everyone at the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America sends a warm THANK YOU to all our supporters, sponsors and committee members who made this event possible.

You may recall that the event was established through the dedication of U.A. International Representative of the Pipetrades in California and Hawaii Jim Kellogg, California Building Trades President Bob Balgenorth, and then California Building Trades Vice President Roger Hamilton, who came together in 2001 to brainstorm ideas for a fund raiser. It was Roger's idea to support research into a cure for Mesothelioma while promoting less tobacco use in the building trades. Although, Roger had been diagnosed with cancer several months before the first tournament, Roger was determined to make the first event in 2002 a success while having a great time out on the golf course. Cindy Hamilton has since been Chair of the Committee for the annual event and has done a magnificent job, dedicating many hours of hard work to bring friends and supporters together to lead the charge for a mesothelioma cancer cure.

This year's event was particularly special and included a very special guest, a mesothelioma survivor and patient of Dr. Parkash Gill. This gentleman's fight for survival began in 2008 when he was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma. With the help of friends he was put in touch with the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America and began Dr. Gill's Veglin treatment shortly after. Since then he has undergone over 30 rounds of Veglin treatments, shrinking his mesothelioma to a size that can be removed through surgery. He is now living cancer free. This story of survival and triumph over this terrible disease is truly inspiring and serves as a reminder to all of the supporters and sponsors where their donations are going. We applaud his determination to survive and his inspiring outlook on life to beat this cancer and have fun while doing it!

After a beautiful round of golf, supporters came together in the clubhouse for drinks and a delicious dinner. Bob Balgenorth and Cindy Hamilton spoke of the great support everyone has shown each year in helping fund progressive treatments and an eventual cure for mesothelioma cancer. They thanked everyone for their continued support and introduced Jerry and Elizabeth Paul who highlighted how everyone's involvement has ensured progress by introducing Dr. Gill's patient who had just finished a round of golf. This gentleman paid homage to Roger and Cindy Hamilton who he felt helped save his life by choosing to support mesothelioma cancer research. He then told all the supporters his story of survival and thanked everyone for their support of him and the Foundation.

2010 California State Pipe Trades Council Convention

Leaders discuss how to help Labor Union brothers and sisters

May 2010

Leaders gathered at the California State Pipe Trades Council 19th Annual Convention this year on May 8, 2010 at Monterey, California. Four individuals, who are a dream team power house in their collective circle of influence, met and they are working together to bring hope for a cure to Mesothelioma. This is their story.

James W. Kellogg and Jerry Neal Paul support California Building Trades Unions and mesothelioma cancer treatment.
Rod L. Cameron, Harry M. Rotz, Jerry Neil Paul, and James W. Kellogg.

Rod L. Cameron is the Executive Director of the California State Pipe Trades Council who represents thousands of plumbers and pipe fitters at Local Unions throughout the state of California. In 1969 he joined the United Association so he too could represent over 300,000 members in the United States who work in the plumbing and pipe fitting industry.

Over the years, Mr. Cameron has worked in partnership with environmental groups, consumer groups, and other organizations concerned with labor work conditions including the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America. With the California State Pipe Trades Council he has fought to ensure health, safety and performance evaluation of potentially dangerous or substandard plumbing materials before they are approved for use in the California Plumbing Code making the building materials accessible to plumbers and pipe fitters.

Rod Cameron has led the California Pipe Trades Council in its successful advocacy for stringent testing and review of new plumbing materials and this mission has protected California families and workers from exposure to potentially dangerous piping and other buildings materials.

Harry M. Rotz is the Business Manager over the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Local 447, based in Sacramento, California. A quick google search of public records show that he has been very active in leading the union as least as far back as 1993 and his influence in Sacramento City Hall through the plumbers union he serves is indisputable. Mr. Rotz leads the purpose of the Local 447 in a very humble and low profile sort of way. The Sacramento Bee newspaper says: “Union business manager Harry Rotz is described in political circles as a Wizard of Oz, rarely showing his face but constantly making his presence known. He never does media interviews, doesn't like to wear name tags at events, and at Sacramento City Hall is known simply as "Harry."

Sacramento Municipal Utility Board member Nancy Bui describes Harry Rotz as a man who gets the job done, "He's totally the wizard behind the curtain."

"(Rotz) carries the lion's share on a lot of things," said Matt Kelly, Secretary Treasurer of the Sacramento-Sierra Building and Construction Trades Council. "And what Local 447 does benefits all the building trades and labor in general."

While Harry Rotz humbly stays unknown to outsiders, his work through the Local 447 sustaining its mission is very clear: promoting unionized workers and taking care of the 1,300 plumbers the union represents. This includes being a part of the team to bring progress for a cure to cancer found in plumbers, pipe fitters, and all other laborers within the building trades.

Jerry Neil Paul and James W. Kellogg have created and brought us the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America with its mission to fund research that will lead to the quickest cure for mesothelioma.

Rod, Harry, Jerry and James got together at the convention to discuss and brain storm ways they could best help the Pipe Trades brothers and sisters get more help from the Foundation and Dr. Parkash S. Gill, Oncologist. Ideas and plans were made to further the progress of research on the Veglin clinical trials to Phase III, and how to get University of California Davis involved in the clinical trials.

“Aim to Cure Mesothelioma Cancer ”

– Birdslanding , California

April 9, 2010

The “ Aim to Cure ” Mesothelioma clay-shoot, hosted by Foundation Board Member and International Pipetrades Representative Jim Kellogg, was a great success bringing in approximately $75,000 for mesothelioma research. This year's event saw a larger turnout than previous years with 166 shooters and supporters of the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America coming together at the Birdslanding Hunting Preserve and Sporting Clay Facility. Representing the Foundation at the event was Board Member Jim Kellogg, Medical Advisory Chairman Dr. Parkash Gill and Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker.

After a cease fire and a delicious lunch Jim Kellogg thanked everyone who attended and spoke about the importance of staying involved in the events and continuing to raise awareness. He then introduced Dr. Parkash Gill who informed everyone of the great news coming from the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Medical Center . Veglin will be introduced into the 3rd and FINAL Phase of the FDA Clinical Trial process. Also, new Mesothelioma fighting drugs, EPH-B4 and Delta, are showing amazing results. This is fantastic news and can be attributed to the support and contributions from the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America.

As always, 100% of the money raised during the event will go to Mesothelioma cancer research. With these sizable donations we can be assured that Dr. Gill's Mesothelioma cancer research at USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Medical Center will be moving in the right direction. Thank you all who participated and made the event a success!

DC EVENTS 2009

A big thank you goes out to Southern California Pipetrades District Council 16 who organized two events this summer to help raise funds for the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America. The 7th annual Golf Invitational and the Cure Meso Clayshoot generated approximately $150,000 for mesothelioma research! In such difficult economic times, the success of these events and generosity of our supporters is truly overwhelming!

Representing the Foundation at both events were Board Member and Paul & Hanley Partner Jerry Neil Paul, Executive Director & Board Member Elizabeth Paul, Medical Director Dr. Parkash Gill and Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker. Speaking at both events, Dr. Gill emphasized the necessity of fundraising and the support of our donors and volunteers in making progress fighting this terrible disease. With their support we can beat this cancer.

Attendees at the 7th Annual Golf Invitational had a special treat and a reminder of exactly what we are all fighting for: testimony from a Mesothelioma survivor. After his doctors discovered his mesothelioma during a routine surgery, this patient was given a poor prognosis for survival. Never one to quit, he looked elsewhere for treatment and spoke with Dr. Gill about clinical trials and other mesothelioma treatment options. Now, a year and a half later, he is still being treated with a combination of Veglin and chemotherapy and has shown such progress that he is able to get back to work as a landscaper. What an inspiring story of willpower and triumph!

The Foundation would like to personally thank all of those who organized and supported this year's event. Without the support and organizing skills of people such as Jim Kellogg, Sid Stolper, Mike Layton and John Ferruccio, and Committee members Jerry and Elizabeth Paul, Jack Ferrara and David Harper, these events would not have been possible. THANK YOU ALL!!!

Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational

June 1, 2009

Once again the “Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational” was a monumental success. The 8 th annual golf invitational was held on June 1, 2009 at the pristine Napa Valley Country Club and generated $85,000 , all of which will be donated to the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America. Representing the Foundation at the event were Board Member and Paul & Hanley Partner Jerry Neil Paul, Medical Director Dr. Parkash Gill and Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker.

As many of you know the event was established through the brainstorming of U.A. International Representative of the Pipetrades in California and Hawaii Jim Kellogg, California Building Trades President Bob Balgenorth, and then California Building Trades Vice President and International Representative of the Insulators Roger Hamilton. After being diagnosed with cancer Roger felt the need to support research into a cure for mesothelioma while promoting less tobacco use in the building trades. Since Roger's untimely passing his wife, Cindy Hamilton, has taken over as Chair of the Committee and has done a magnificent job in filling the venue with 144 golfers every year. She has dedicated many hours of hard work to the event, which has brought friends and supporters together in memoriam of Roger and helped lead the charge for a cure. To date the event has generated well over $500,000 for mesothelioma research. THANK YOU ROGER AND CINDY HAMILTON!

After a great day out on the golf course Dr. Gill and Jerry Paul thanked everyone for their continued support and talked about the advances being made in mesothelioma research. Great results are being seen in patients who are being treated with a combination of Veglin and chemotherapy and there is also the development of new drugs such as B-4 and Delta. Dr. Gill mentioned one such patient who is currently cancer free and has been able to get back to work as a landscaper after being treated aggressively with Veglin and chemotherapy.

We want to thank you to everyone who had a hand in making this year's event a great success. Without the help of Cindy Hamilton, Bob Balgenorth, Robert Arns, Debra Chaplan, Paul Doolitle, Jim Kellogg, Russ O'Brien, Steve Steele and Jerry and Elizabeth Paul the event would not be possible. Your support ensures research into mesothelioma will continue and a cure will be found!

Student charity for Mesothelioma lung cancer research

Junior D. Fout shares about family and friends living with lung cancer

April 2009

Fund Raiser Coordinator Victoria Fout presents MESORFA Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker with the night's proceeds

The Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America was the proud beneficiary of a mesothelioma benefit dinner held at the Foothill Community Church in Angels Camp, CA. The evening was very special given the fact it was planned and hosted by high school student Victoria Fout whose father, Junior D. Fout, has been battling mesothelioma since January of 2007. The evening was kicked off with a delicious dinner and a silent auction to generate additional donations for MESORFA. Victoria Fout then presented the audience with facts on mesothelioma and highlighted the fact that mesothelioma is more than just a commercial you see on television. It is a cancer that we know little about and one in which there are very few treatment options available, underscoring the necessity of funding organizations such as MESORFA.

Assistant Executive Director Shane Rucker attended the benefit on behalf of MESORFA and spoke about the advancements being made in mesothelioma research and the treatment options that are now available.  He thanked all of those in attendance since without the help of private donors mesothelioma research would not move forward and treatment options would remain limited. Victoria Fout then presented Shane Rucker and MESORFA with the night's proceeds, which totaled close to $5,000 and a fantastic result for a first time fund raiser!

The night concluded with Mr. Junior D. Fout giving a sincere and emotional speech highlighting the hardships that cancer brings on the family and friends of cancer patients. It is not just the patients who struggle with cancer. Also affected are those around the patient, known as the support group, who must watch their loved ones undergo long and difficult treatments.

MESORFA was honored to be apart of the event and wants to congratulate Victoria for putting on a great event!

Contra Costa County Sheriff Warren Rupf

Contra Costa County Sheriff Warren Rupf presented International Pipetrades Representative and Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America Board Member Jim Kellogg with a generous donation of $34,000 for mesothelioma research. This years' Contra Costa Sherriffs' Charity Ball was held at the Blackhawk Automobile Museum in Danville, CA and marked the 29th year of giving for the Contra Costa Sheriffs'. As always, 100% of the donation given to the MESORFA will go directly to the USC Comprehensive Cancer Center for Dr. Parkash Gill's mesothelioma research. This years' event was special for a couple of reasons. First and foremost this year included a 3rd beneficiary, the Injured Marines Semper Fi Fund, which provides financial assistance to injured Marines and their families. During the festivities an American flag that was flown over Camp Fallujah in Iraq was auctioned off and generated an additional $10,000 for the Semper Fi Fund. This years' event also marked the second and final year that the MESORFA will be a beneficiary of the event. We wanted to extend our deepest thanks for keeping mesothelioma research in the public eye and providing the MESORFA with more than $90,000 in donations over the last 2 years. A special thank you goes to Sheriff Warren Rupf, Executive Assistant Maurine Wamosh, and International Pipetrades Representative Jim Kellogg who made it all possible.

March 10, 2008

USC Keck School of Medicine's publication of Internal Medicine Ink featured MESORFA's Chairman of the Medical Advisory Board, Dr. Parkash Gill for his work on a new cancer-fighting drug EphB4. The article highlights the effectiveness of EphB4 on bladder, breast and colorectal cancer calling it “a major step forward in the management of human malignancies”. In addition to these cancers EphB4 has also been shown to be effective on patients diagnosed with mesothelioma and we hope to have it submitted to the FDA this year for Phase I clinical trials. Thank you Dr. Gill for your continued dedication to making mesothelioma and other cancers thing's of the past.

Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America presented with a check for $110,000

December 2, 2007

California State Building Trades President Bob Balgenorth, Chair of the Committee for the Roger Hamilton Golf Invitational, Cindy Hamilton, and Business Manager of the Alameda Heat & Frost Insulators Local 16 Steve Steele presented the Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America with a check for $110,000 on behalf of the California State Building Trades. There to receive the check on behalf of the Foundation were MESORFA Board Member and U.A. International Representative Jim Kellogg, MESORFA Executive Director Elizabeth Ann Paul, and MESORFA Board Member and Founding Partner of Paul & Hanley LLP, Jerry Paul. The generous contribution was the result of the enormously successful Roger Hamilton Golf Invitational and the Aim to Cure Clay Shoot fundraisers held in 2007. The fundraisers have generated much needed funding for the mesothelioma research being conducted under Dr. Parkash Gill's leadership at the USC/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center. A special thanks goes out to all of those from the California Building Trades who helped organize and participate in the Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational and Aim to Cure Sporting Clay Shoot fundraisers.

United Association of the Southern California Pipetrades District Council 16...
do it again for the consecutive 5th year!

November 6, 2007

Los Angeles, CA. - For the fifth year in a row the United Association of the Southern California Pipetrades District Council 16 presented a check to Dr. Parkash Gill to help support his mesothelioma cancer research. District Council 16 Business Manager Sid Stolper, U.A. International Representative Jim Kellogg, MRFA Executive Director Elizabeth Paul and MRFA Board Member Jerry Neil Paul presented the $100,000 check at a recent meeting held in Los Angeles. Dr. Gill and his team of researchers were overjoyed with the support and highlighted the advancements made in finding a cure for mesothelioma.

Most exciting is the identification and early development of two new drugs, EphB4 and AXL. EphB4 is an anti-angiogenesis drug that has shown great promise in laboratory studies and will be submitted for FDA Phase I clinical trials in May of 2008. EphB4 is made up of two active proteins that block blood flow to cancerous tumors preventing the tumors from growing to an uncontrollable size. A lab in San Diego, CA is now mass-producing the proteins needed to make the drug available to mesothelioma patients. The Foundation and its team of researchers have very high hopes for EphB4. The second drug AXL is a very recent discovery by researchers at the USC/Norris Cancer Center and has proved to attack the proteins outside of the tumor cells in preliminary studies. We are encouraged by these recent developments and hope to have more information on their progress in our next newsletter.

The Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America appreciates all the hard work and tireless efforts put in by the fundraisers this year. Without their dedication and support, research would not be able to progress as much as it has. Thank you!

Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational

June 4th, 2007

Once again the "Roger Hamilton Memorial Golf Invitational" was a huge success, taking in over $120,000 for mesothelioma research! The event, held on June 4th, 2007 at the pristine Napa Valley Country Club, was the 6th annual golf invitational designed to promote a No Smoking atmosphere in the California State Building Trades. The event was established through the hard work and dedication of U.A. International Representative of the Pipetrades in California and Hawaii Jim Kellogg, California Building Trades President Bob Balgenorth, and then California Building Trades Vice President Roger Hamilton, who came together in 2001 to brainstorm ideas for a fundraiser. Roger was the first Chair of the Tobacco Free-Off Golf Tournament Committee and it was his idea to support research into a cure for Mesothelioma while promoting less tobacco use in the building trades. Although, Roger had been diagnosed with cancer several months before the first tournament, Roger was determined to make the first event in 2002 a success while having a great time out on the course. To accomplish this goal he called over a hundred people to participate. Cindy Hamilton has since been Chair of the Committee for the annual event and has done a magnificent job, dedicating many hours of hard work to the event to bring friends and supporters together to lead the charge for a cancer cure.

After a beautiful round of golf Bob Balgenorth, Jim Kellogg, Cindy Hamilton, and Debra Chaplan all spoke of the great support everyone has shown each year for funding progressive treatments and an eventual a cure for mesothelioma thru The Mesothelioma Research Foundation of America. Jim Kellogg announced that the California State Assembly and Senate had passed a" Cure Mesothelioma Cancer Week" as an annual awareness week beginning in the first week of June, the first in California history! Dr. Parkash Gill, Board Certified Oncologist and Hematologist at USC/ Norris Comprehensive Cancer Hospital in Los Angeles, then spoke of his progress with Veglin and B4 in FDA Phase II trials. Elizabeth Paul, Executive Director, thanked everyone for their support and highlighted how it has not only ensured progress will be moving forward on mesothelioma but that it provided Dr. Gill with the funding needed to be the first to use an Anti-Angio Genesis treatment for mesothelioma patients at USC/Norris. Jerry Paul then spoke of how Dr. Gill's work has spawned other clinical trials around the country, which are now using drugs similar to Veglin for meso patients.

The Committe Members included: Roger Hamilton, Chair in Memoriam, Bob Balgenorth as Honorary Co-Chair, Attorney and Distinguished Course Sponsor Robert Arns, Mesothelioma Research Foundation Board Member and Partner at Paul, Hanley & Harley Jerry Neil Paul, Board Member and Executive Director of the Mesothelioma Research Foundation Elizabeth Ann Paul. From the California Building & Trades Council Debra Chaplan, Mike Cooper, Paul Doolittle, U.A. International Representative Jim Kellogg, Russ O'Brien, Executive Director of the California State Pipe Trades Ted Reed, and Business Manager of the Alameda Heat & Frost Insulators Local 16 Steve Steele. Steve always a loyal and good friend to the Hamilton's, as well as having a heartfelt desire to help his members find a cure for mesothelioma, was a very active Committee Member and host at the event.
